NOUN & IT’S TYPES WITH EXAMPLES IN DETAIL
1. WHAT IS NOUN?
All names are nouns. It may be the name of anything. For example Sun, river, bird, water, love, iron, happiness, book, tree, orange, red, sky, India, party, residence, school etc.
Hence, the names of persons, places, animals, things, feelings or ideas are called noun.
2. THEORIES OF NOUN:-
Gramaticians have classified nouns on the basis of two theories-
Traditional theory
Modern theory.
3. TRADITIONAL THEORY
Traditional Gramaticians have divided nouns into five types. These are-
1. Proper noun
2. Common noun
3. Collective noun
4. Material noun
5. Abstract noun
A. Proper noun:-
Proper nouns are the special names of persons, places, things or animals.
The particular names of persons, places, things or animals are called proper noun.
For example Ludhiana, Mt. Abu, Brussels, Moon, Asia, Cambridge University, Mahatma Gandhi, President, Dr Sandra etc.
N.B. Proper nouns always begins with a capital letter.
B. Common Noun:-
Common nouns are the common names of persons, places, animals and things.
The common names of persons, places, things and animals are called common nouns.
For instance mountain, ocean, fish, tree, lion, dog, student, postman, teacher, newspaper, desk, television etc.
Comparative study of Proper Noun & Common Nouns
Proper noun
Definition: Special names of persons, places, things or animals.
Examples
Persons: Anand, Minati, Rajesh, Rahamat,
Sonali, Pallavi, Shivam, John & Stuart.
Places: Coochbehar, Siliguri, India, Tiger hill, Arabian Sea & Ganga.
Animals: Laxmi, Tom, Don etc.
Things: Ramayana, Efiel Tower, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Najrul Sadan, Titan & Tejas.
Common noun
Definition:- Common names of persons, places, animals and things.
Examples
Persons: boy, girl, student, cobbler, driver,
policeman brother, uncle, shopkeeper
Places: village, city, town, country, hill, sea & river.
Animals: cow, cat, dog, parrot, peageon & camel.
Things: book, tower, house, lock,
plane & train.
C. Collective Noun:-
The names of groups or collections are called collective noun.
Examples are:-
Army – group of soldiers.
Bunch – collection of keys/ grapes.
Fleet – collection of sheep / cars
Pack – collection of cards/ bees.
School – collection of fish.
D. Material Noun:-
Names of matters/materials.
The names of matters/ materials are called material nouns.
Examples include-Sugar, salt, rice, floor, hair, cotton, water, milk, oil, etc.
N.B. material can’t be counted. Hence the names of matters are known as uncountable noun. They can be measured, weighted, lifted. Has mass and weight.
E. Abstract Noun:-
Names of qualities, feelings, ideas and emotions. These can’t be touched or seen , but be felt.
The names of feelings, qualities, ideas and emotions are called abstract noun.
For example kindness, foolishness, richness, poverty, health, freedom, wisdom, hatred, youth, truth etc.
4. MODERN THEORY:
According to the modern gramaticians nouns are of three types. These are -
Countable Noun
Uncountable Noun
Proper Noun
1. Countable Noun:
Countable means something that can be counted. Hence, nouns that can be counted are called Countable noun. Examples are boy, baby, drum, class, team, party, day, bed, knife etc.
Only Countable Nouns have both singular and plural form.
Singular Plural
Boy Boys
Baby Babies
Ball Balls
Peacock Peacocks
Computer Computers
Teacher Teachers
N.B. Only common nouns and collective nouns are countable nouns.
2. Uncountable Nouns:-
Nouns that can’t be counted are called uncountable nouns. Examples include-Sugar, hair, iron, gold, happiness, laughter, love, enjoyment, brevity etc.
Since these nouns can’t be counted, do not have any plural form.
Uncountable nouns include material nouns & abstract nouns.
